All most informative. In line with the topic let me mention that I recently came across a short article on the Nov. 12th "Our Daily Bread" blog by Ortiz which included an article "Edward Irving is Unnerving" which compares Irving with Darby and, with quotes, shows that Irvingites clearly taught an imminent pretribulation rapture which contradicts many dispensationalists including Scofield and Ironside (and also Huebner and Ice) who have stated that the Irvingites never taught it. Of course this would be of interest mainly to church historians who delight in the origins of dispensationalism. Thanks for your weighty discussion. Belle

P.S. Don't stop with Homage to A Broken Man...but it will prevent idealism from blinding you as read other community-oriented materials.

Community is requisite to the Christian walk, but it is beneficial and wonderful not because its experience is so wonderful (although it is in a way), but because it prevents us from being able to stay hidden behind our masks of religiosity and capability. Community rubs us raw and is usually annoying (to be frank).

It's kind of like the sub-title of one of my favorite books on marriage: Sacred Marriage by Gary Thomas. The sub-title is: "What if God Designed Marriage to Make Us Holy More Than to Make us Happy?"

You're right, Chad, the review never happened. I started reading something else, and didn't have time to stop with Irresistible Revolution. It's been like that for about 2 years now. Seems to be slowing down a bit now, and I'm beginning to produce again instead of just consume.

Anyway, books about community...quite a few occur to me, but it might be beneficial to read Homage to a Broken Man by Peter Mommsen. It's the story of the life of J. Heinrich Arnold. It's the story of a man who lived in Christian community and experienced both its benefits and its terrors. The book can be downloaded at http://www.plough.com/ebooks/homage.html.

Tell Aree I said, "hello"

Since its been about two years since you wrote this, I guess the review never happened. Thanks for the encouragement though; a lot of my friends are fans of this book so this encouraged me to try it out. I discovered your blog a few months ago from Aree Ogir and a lot of posts have been very meaningful for me. I noticed some brief comments on community in a couple of your posts. Is there a certain book on community you recommend? It is a subject I would like to have a better understanding of.

This really struck me. Because that is what they really want. And don't underestimate them! I'm reading "She calls me Daddy" right now. Highly recomend it.

Ahh, now I'm following better! You make some good points. As it relates to Willard's quote and your remarks, I'd like to chew on that a bit more.
